THE FORGE is a 6 month internship specifically designed for college and university graduates with knowledge and passion for International Development. Forge interns are emerging Christian leaders who want to put their skills to practical use and take the next step in their careers. They also share a strong commitment to seeing communities around the world grow into fullness of life characterized by dignity, hope, justice and peace.

The Forge offers the opportunity to develop a robust work portfolio, integrate faith with vocation, and make a tangible, sustainable contribution to International Teams Canada’s transformational development programs.

About The Role

Interns play a valuable role in increasing the overall capacity and effectiveness of our community transformation programs. You will assist in activities related to the design, monitoring, and evaluation of iTeams Canada projects and programs by:

  • conducting field research and gathering data, stories and images
  • working with program leadership to complete/update program planning documents and reports
  • developing promotional materials
  • writing and submitting technical funding proposals

In addition, our internship explores the role of the church in transformational development. You will engage in practices for spiritual formation and growth, learn and apply principles of team dynamics, and cultivate your personal leadership style and skills — all while working alongside a team of people who share your faith and your passion for international development.

Primary Duties & Skills

  • Travel to one or more designated locations to gather information, stories and images which will help program leadership with design, monitoring, evaluation and promotion.  
  • Engage with the Program Champion for the purpose of sharing information, growing the partnership, and furthering program objectives.
  • Identify and provide input into the development of program indicators in order to monitor and verify outcomes.
  • Write six month program reports and make recommendations related to progress toward program outcomes.
  • Assist in the development of financial budgets based upon program design.
  • Research and write technical funding and grant proposals.
  • Learn and apply fundraising skills and tools to assist Program Champions in meeting program fundraising goals, and actively participate in partnership fundraising initiatives, events and activities.
  • Skills:
    • Administrative knowledge and skills such as organization, word processing, strong written communication.
    • Language skills (depending upon location fluency in French may be required)
    • Well developed research and writing skills

Responsibility

  • Engage in personal development as an International Development Practitioner.
  • Cultivate Christ-centered practices which foster transformational development, growth and character.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the program and organization.
  • Attend all training and meetings as required, providing input and leadership when guided to do so.
  • Meet regular and unexpected deadlines, being flexible and adapting to the unpredictable nature this kind of work can sometimes entail.
  • Raise $10,000 towards Forge program goals and objectives, through learned fundraising skills, activities and initiatives.
Education

  • University/Bachelor’s degree or certification and specialized training as needed in International Development, Community Development, Global Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies etc.

Specialized knowledge

  • Knowledge of Results Based Management, particularly program design, monitoring and evaluation concepts and techniques.
  • Administrative knowledge and skills such as organization, word processing, strong written communication.
  • Well developed research and writing skills.
  • Experience using word processing software, Internet, Skype, etc.

  • Leadership:  Possesses leadership skills, knowledge and character consistent with our Statement of Faith, Core Values, Vision and Mission.
  • Adaptability:  Ability to adapt to diverse cultures. This involves being flexible, versatile and/or tolerant in complex situations involving people with different values and goals.
  • Reflection-in-action:  The ability to consciously evaluate situations and intentionally adjust, reflect and take action as needed. This involves developing a high level of consideration and understanding for the local needs, values and goals of communities, program plans or projects.
  • Teamwork:  Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Organization:  Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities.
  • Planning:  Ability to set appropriate goals and make detailed plans for achieving those goals; allotting sufficient time and resources for the work. Evaluate the process and results.
  • Communication:  The ability to plan and deliver oral and written communications that make an impact and persuade their intended audiences.

Experience

  • Prior international experience an asset, but is not required.
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or full-time student in Canada, and legally able to work in Canada.
  • A Criminal Record Check is required.
  • Requires working in office environment in Elmira (September, January & February).
  • Requires the ability to travel, live and work within a developing country for up to three (3) months (i.e. October – December).
  • The role will involve flexible hours during the international assignment.
  • Evening, and weekends to accommodate activities such as meetings, events, or travel may be required.
  • Integration of faith and vocation
  • Learn and practice spiritual disciplines for sustaining transformational development
  • Networking with other NGO’s and International Development experts
  • Development of fundraising skills and expertise in proposal and grant writing
  • Monitoring and Evaluation experience
  • Field Research experience
  • Incubating new ideas and maybe other small NGO’s as a “World Changer”
  • Helping design program sustainability
  • Assess and grow cultural intelligence
  • Learn and apply principles of team dynamics
  • Develop greater awareness of personal leadership style and practice.
  • Completion of the three month international fieldwork assignment (Oct-Dec)
  • Research project completed on implementing community
  • Grant and/or fundraising application completion
  • Development of logical frameworks for program plan
  • Development of a professional portfolio of work
  • $10,000 raised toward the Forge program goals and objectives
